What counts as an AI project?

An AI model reads every project description and rates with an AI focus score from 0 to 100 how much knowledge of and experience with AI the work requires – LLM integration, agent frameworks such as LangChain, RAG pipelines, prompt engineering, machine learning. What counts is what the project actually involves, not whether the word "AI" appears. Here, an AI project is one with an AI focus of 50 or more: from there, AI features are a core part of the work; from 80 on, the project is mainly AI engineering. Between 20 and 49, AI plays only a side role, such as an LLM API integration in otherwise traditional work.

  1. no or hardly any AI (AI focus 0–19)88%
  2. AI on the side (20–49)7%
  3. AI as a core part of the work (50–79)3.5%
  4. mainly AI engineering (80–100)1.7%

Altogether, 12% of the listings involve AI to a noteworthy degree (AI focus 20 or more); 88% involve no or hardly any AI.

What this means for your project search

  1. AI experience pays off beyond ML roles: AI projects appear across developer roles and in consulting. If you have hands-on experience with LLMs, RAG or agents, name it in your profile.
  2. Check the skill list above against your CV: the typical AI skills are the ones other projects rarely ask for.
  3. On the projects page every listing shows its AI focus; set the "Min. AI Focus" slider to 50% to see only AI projects. Projectmatch also matches new projects against your profile automatically. Try it now.

Method

The AI focus score is assigned by an AI model when it reads each listing, on a fixed scale: 0 means no AI content, 20 to 40 AI on the side, 50 to 70 AI as a core part of the work, 80 to 100 mainly AI engineering. Shares refer to all listings with a score. The skills are the unified skills of the skill-cluster analysis without languages and soft skills; "typical" means at least three times as frequent in AI projects as in all projects. The roles are those of the developer-roles analysis; roles with fewer than 200 listings are left out. The remote share counts only listings that state one. The AI focus score is a language model's judgement of the description and is not calibrated against human ratings; single projects may be misjudged, the shares across thousands of listings much less so.

The figures start in July 2026, since when every project is analysed this way, and refer to the projects first listed in a month.
