IT contract length in Germany: how long freelance contracts run, when they start, how often they are extended
The average IT freelance contract in Germany runs 6 months (median): half of the listings stating a duration name at most that, half at least that. 35% run for 12 months or longer, 35% for less than half a year, and 34% of all listings name an option to extend. Clients are often in a hurry: 49% of the listings stating a start want someone right away. The figures cover 44,301 listings, broken down by remote share, developer role and month.
When do IT freelance contracts start?
70% of the listings state a start. 43% of them say "immediately" or "asap"; in others the stated start date already lies before the day of the listing – which also means: now. Together, 82% of the contracts stating a start are to be filled within four weeks. When a listing names a future date, half of those dates lie within 4 weeks.
For freelancers this means: if you are only free in two months, you fit a small part of the listings. A large part of the contracts look for someone who can start now.
How long do IT contracts run?
62% of the listings state a duration or an end date. The median contract length is 6 months; 22% state exactly six months. 35% run a year or longer, 8.3% at least two years.
Are remote contracts shorter?
Not in the median, which is 6 months for fully remote, hybrid and on-site contracts alike. But fewer remote contracts run long: 27% of fully remote contracts run a year or longer, against 41% of hybrid and 32% of on-site ones. The chart shows per remote share the share of contracts running 12 months or more, with the median length and the number of stated durations below.

How often is a contract extension offered?
34% of all listings explicitly name an option to extend. A listing almost never says an extension is ruled out. For many contracts the stated length is a first engagement rather than a fixed end.
Contract length and start by developer role
The share of long contracts differs clearly between roles: Java Fullstack Developer (51%) has the highest share of contracts running 12 months or more, Low-Code Platform Developer (17%) the lowest. Under each role you find the median duration, the share with an extension option and the number of listings stating a duration.
The start differs too: contracts most often start immediately for PLC / Automation Programmer (56%), least often for Java Fullstack Developer (32%).
How much experience is demanded?
Only 20% of the listings state a minimum number of years of experience. Where they do, the median is 5 years: 44% of these listings ask for exactly five years, 25% for three, 63% for five years or more.

What this means for your project search
- Plan your availability tightly: most contracts stating a start want to begin immediately or within a few weeks. Applying months before your current project ends finds few matching listings.
- Expect extensions: for short durations it pays to ask whether an extension is planned – many listings name the option.
- The projects page shows the current listings; Projectmatch matches new projects against your profile automatically. Try it now.

Method
An AI model reads every project description and records the start, duration, end date, extension option and years of experience demanded only when the description states them explicitly. When a listing only names an end date, the duration counts from the stated start, or without one from the day of the listing – projects "until the end of the year" therefore get shorter with every month. A stated duration counts in whole months begun, one calculated from dates is rounded to whole months. The roles are those of the roles analysis; roles with fewer than 150 stated durations or starts are left out.
Other analyses find longer contracts: freelancermap's analysis of software developer rates (September 2026, in German) names a median of nine months. The figures here cover all IT freelance listings from several project boards, not only software development, and count the length a listing states – often the first engagement before an extension.
The figures start in July 2026, since when every project is analysed this way, and refer to the projects first listed in a month.
